Contactless Sleep Monitoring for Clinical Use

SleepWise introduces a new paradigm in sleep diagnostics — a system capable of generating clinically valid respiratory and motion traces without physical sensors or patient contact. It combines computer vision, AI-driven motion analysis, and secure cloud processing to derive respiratory and movement patterns directly from optical data captured by a smartphone.

Unlike traditional polygraphy or polysomnography, which rely on multiple belts, cannulas, and electrodes, SleepWise only needs a standard smartphone equipped with a TrueDepth camera. This enables multi-night recordings, performed comfortably at home or in clinical environments, without interfering with natural sleep.

From Video to Clinical Traces

During sleep, the smartphone’s infrared and depth sensors capture subtle body and chest movements associated with breathing and posture. SleepWise does not record or transmit raw video; instead, it extracts motion metadata — secure numerical representations of displacement and timing.

These data are processed by an AI inference engine that identifies respiratory cycles, body motion, and rest periods, reconstructing clinical-quality traces comparable to those obtained by traditional polygraphy.

Artificial Intelligence as Clinical Support

The role of AI in SleepWise is assistive, not diagnostic. Its purpose is to generate interpretable, reliable data — not to produce automatic conclusions. The physician always remains the final authority in reviewing, validating, and reporting results.

AI pre-identifies potential respiratory events, which appear as annotations within the SleepWise Clinical Platform. Physicians can confirm, modify, or reject them, ensuring full clinical control and maintaining traditional medical workflow integrity.

Designed for Physicians

The SleepWise Clinical Platform reproduces the environment familiar to sleep specialists and pulmonologists:

  • Multi-trace visualization (respiratory effort, movement, posture)
  • Event markers (apnea, hypopnea, arousal)
  • Optional oxygen desaturation and sound-based events
  • Manual editing and annotation tools
  • Automated report generation (AHI, ODI, event classification)

All traces are time-synchronized and easily navigable. The user interface is intentionally designed to mirror traditional polygraphy review software, minimizing training needs.

Clinical Workflow

  1. Acquisition — The patient records a sleep session using a smartphone placed near the bed.
  2. Processing — Metadata are encrypted and uploaded to the SleepWise secure cloud for AI-based analysis.
  3. Physician Review — The clinician accesses the SleepWise Platform, reviews the traces, adjusts events, and finalizes the report.
  4. Storage and Compliance — Data are anonymized, stored securely, and remain accessible for follow-up comparison.

This workflow maintains medical oversight while leveraging automation for efficiency and scalability.

Data Privacy and Regulatory Framework

SleepWise is fully compliant with GDPR and the Swiss Federal Data Protection Act (FADP). All transmissions are encrypted, and no personal video or identifiable data are stored. The platform is operated within Swiss-based secure servers, ensuring data residency and patient confidentiality.

Clinical validations have already confirmed performance comparable to standard polysomnography, with 100% sensitivity and 83% specificity in event detection. The system is currently under CE and FDA certification review.
