THE TECHNOLOGY
A Software-Only System Built for Medical Accuracy
SleepWise is not a new sensor — it is a software ecosystem designed to deliver the same quality of diagnostic data as traditional polygraphy, using only devices that already exist in patients’ homes. Its core innovation lies in replacing expensive, sensor-based hardware with advanced computer vision algorithms, metadata-based analysis, and secure cloud computing.
The result is a clinically validated, scalable, and user-friendly solution that reduces costs while maintaining diagnostic reliability.
Optical Sensing Through TrueDepth Cameras
At the patient side, SleepWise uses the TrueDepth camera available in most modern smartphones or tablets. This near-infrared sensor continuously measures depth information and subtle surface movements, allowing detection of breathing patterns and posture changes even in complete darkness. Because the acquisition is fully contactless, it eliminates discomfort, improves adherence, and enables recordings over multiple nights.
Unlike traditional systems, no belts, nasal cannulas, or oximeter probes are required to obtain the respiratory traces needed for medical interpretation.
Motion and Respiration Analysis
Each depth frame acquired is converted into numerical displacement maps — a representation of micro-movements of the thorax and abdomen. The proprietary motion analysis pipeline processes these signals to extract the respiratory waveform, filtering artefacts and compensating for small shifts in position. From this information, SleepWise reconstructs patterns equivalent to thoraco-abdominal effort signals used in polygraphy.
This analysis is optimized for paediatric and adult physiology, with adaptive parameters that automatically adjust to breathing rate, age, and movement amplitude.
AI-Based Inference and Trace Generation
The artificial intelligence layer in SleepWise performs inference, not diagnosis. Its role is to transform motion metadata into structured respiratory traces, identify potential events, and provide pre-annotations. All detected events remain editable — the clinician can confirm, modify, or reject them within the medical software. This ensures that the physician retains full control of interpretation, while benefiting from a faster and more consistent analysis process.
The AI engine continuously learns from anonymized datasets, improving its ability to detect subtle respiratory anomalies such as hypopneas, micro-arousals, or irregular effort patterns.
Cloud Architecture and Data Management
All processing takes place within the SleepWise secure cloud infrastructure, hosted in Switzerland and compliant with GDPR and Swiss Federal Data Protection Act (FADP). Only metadata — never raw video — are transmitted and stored. End-to-end encryption, automatic anonymization, and time-limited retention policies guarantee maximum confidentiality.
The cloud environment allows:
- Automatic software updates
- Consistent algorithm calibration across all users
- Remote access for clinicians to review and validate traces from any workstation
Software for Clinicians
SleepWise includes a dedicated software platform for physicians and sleep technicians. Through this application, users can:
- Visualize respiratory and motion traces
- Review automatically detected events
- Add manual annotations or corrections
- Generate standardized reports (AHI, ODI, event type, duration, trends)
The interface reproduces the familiar workflow of traditional polygraphy, allowing immediate adoption with minimal training.
Clinical-Grade Validation and Continuous Improvement
The SleepWise technology has been validated in multiple clinical environments, showing high correlation (r > 0.9) with standard polysomnography. Ongoing studies are extending validation to paediatric populations and multi-night home monitoring.
The platform architecture supports continuous algorithm updates, allowing new versions of the inference model to be deployed without user intervention — ensuring every clinician always operates with the latest validated model.
Why This Matters
By removing the dependency on dedicated sensors, SleepWise represents a shift in medical technology: from hardware-based diagnostics to data-driven clinical intelligence. It democratizes access to sleep diagnostics while preserving the physician’s central role — combining precision, comfort, and scientific reliability.
